5 Tips to Help Your Personal Creativity

Ross Hall, www.garol.com

The companies that are going to succeed in the New Economy are those who can constantly meet and exceed the expectations of their customers. Part of this equation demands an element of innovation and creativity from the workforce. Without the ability to constantly see how things could be better the organization will become locked in a process of incremental and unfocused improvements which have blighted some of the UK's former flagship companies.

But what can you do personally to help stimulate your own creativity? Here are five top tips.

1 - It's a matter of scale.

Not everyone is going to have the next "big idea" that changes the business landscape. However, a constant stream of small steps in the right direction can be as beneficial to the organization You need to remember that even the great artists drew sketches as they made their way towards the Masterpiece!

2 - Have an Idea a Day.

Try it. Sit down for ten minutes at the end of the day, take a look at the way you did things that day and work out how you could have done them better. At the end of the week take a look at all of your ideas and see if there are any you could actually run with. Sure, most of your ideas will be unworkable, but you want the ones which are!

3 - Question Everything.

Nothing can be taken for granted. Feel free to challenge absolutely anything and everything that you think gets in the way of being a truly great organization If you find yourself saying "that wouldn't work because it's not the way we do things" then you've got the wrong frame of mind.

4 - Get Diverse.

One of the barriers to our personal creativity is the rut we create for ourselves. So get out there and do new things. If you normally read Grisham, try one of William Gibson's books. Read case studies, and not just from your own industry, then work out how they relate to you (and how you can improve on them).

5 - Always Be Ready.

The good idea can strike at any time, so make sure you always have something handy that you can capture your idea on - even if it is at midnight on New Year's Eve!

One final thing to consider is once you've had the idea, what then? Learn how to develop your ideas in to business plans or proposals that are acceptable to the organization, and find those people who can actually make it happen and become their friend!
