2001 - The Best Year Ever, Set Your Goals Now!

Ed Kleinman, 07 December 2000

Did the year 2000 go as well as you expected and hoped it would? Did you achieve all your personal and professional goals? If so, congratulate yourself and plan to make next year even better.

If you are not where you want to be, don't give up. Now is the time to insure that 2001 will be your most successful year ever. No, I don't have any secret formula for winning the lottery or having a major VC dropping millions in your lap, but I do know the steps you can to insure your success.

Various studies over the years have related important information about the distribution of wealth. These numbers have remained constant for the past 30 years. 3% of the population is independently wealthy, 10% live comfortable, 60% live paycheck to paycheck and about 27% need some sort of assistance. The primary factor explaining this distribution is the degree to which people set and follow specific goals and plans. The 3% of the population who are independently wealthy have specific written goals, written plans to achieve those goals, a time fr4ame to accomplish them and a tracking system in place to be able to see what they have achieved and where they have to go. The 10% have specific goals, but maybe no set plan of action. The remainder rarely, if ever, set any goals at all. What happens to inherited wealth and lottery winnings? The statistics show us that they are quickly spent because the recipients have no goals, no destination, and no plan and do otherwise.

The reality is THAT YOU WILL ULTIMATLY EARN WHAT YOU BELIEVE-NOT A DOLLAR MORE, NOT A DOLLAR LESS. This also applies to every single facet of you life-mental, physical, and spiritual. YOU ARE IN CHARGE.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING 10 QUESTIONS AND YOU MAY BE ON THE WAY TO HAVE MORE CONTROL OF YOUR DESTINY.

1. Do you have a cause?

Why are you in business? What makes you get out of bed everyday? Is it just a job or is there something else driving you? Start with a dream and turn that dream into a goal. Commit to your goal in writing and place it somewhere you can see it every day. This will remind you of why you go through the rigors of building your business every day.

2. Don't look back.

Focus on where you want to be at the ends of the year, and then commit to getting there.        Do not hedge your bets- " don't know if I should be doing this or that". Maybe I'll         Try something else". "Maybe I'll do it for another week or so". JUMP IN WITH 2         FEET AND GO FOR IT! Don't look back, don't go backwards, stay focused on         those GOALS.

3. Have you put together your business plan for 2001?

Hoping to achieve your goals without a business plan is like driving from Vancouver to Miami without a map. If you get there, it will be by accident. You must work the details out step by step.

4. Do you have four major goals for the year?

Pick 4 major goals that are important to you-personal and professional. Prioritize them. Visualize so that they are clear: see yourself accomplishing them, hear the sounds that come with success and imagine how you will feel at the end of the year when you accomplish them.

5.Can you master the discipline to manage the daily behavior?

Take it one day at a time. Once you have established your plan, can you take the action to work it day by day? Too many people in business have a conditional commitment to their plans. They will do what it takes unless. it's raining, the surfs up, to much paper work, and it's sunny, whatever. You must have unconditional commitment to your plan and do it regardless of obstacles or distractions.

6.How will you stay out in front of your financial obligations?

What I mean here is, how are you going to meet your expenses and how much money do you need to cover them? Undue financial pressure will affect your attitude and desperation can set in. Create a savings plan and put money aside for emergencies. Yes, even if you have a fat Angel on your shoulder with unlimited capital, just look at all the failures and ask your self, "Do I want to be on that list"?

Bad money planning and poor management will get you there very fast.

7. Will you start over each day, or do you have a system for working smart?

If you have a product or service that needs to be marketed and sold, then we know that the professionals target referrals. They know that there last client or customer is a source for their next. No one wants to work blindly and cold call or waste advertising dollars with no return on investment. If your present clients/customers are satisfied then they know people you should know and they will introduce them to you just by asking. The professional know how to network their clients and make the outcome to be a win-win for all parties.

8. Do you keep a journal?

Do you keep a record of what worked and what didn't? Do you debrief each business move so that you can learn to grow stronger? Successful people are always learning. A simple journal will help you stick to your plan and fine-tune your skills.

9. Do you have a Mastermind group or coach?

Do you have a support group or coach to help you reach your goals? Are you prepared to share your goals with these people? The coach or group has to be committed to helping achieve your goals. They have to be a source of inspiration and hold each other accountable. You have to be willing to invest the time, energy and possible money to make it work for you.

10. Can you see the future?

Take the time to write a description of how you feel and what you will have accomplished when you achieve the things you want for yourself and your family in 2001. Capture that feeling internalize it. Think about it every day.

If you are serious about making 2001 the best year yet, then you will set goals, develop a plan and a system to track your progress. Finally, regardless of how tough it gets, you will TAKE ACTION!

Good luck in 2001. Don't make it a space oddity with no business growth, make a SPACE ODDYSSE. GROWTH TO THE MAX.
